INFO

Treatment Peat is a clean Finnish natural product that is lifted out of the peatland without heavy machinery to prevent breakage of its composition. Only the best raw materials are accepted for Peat Care. Immediately after extraction, the peat is ground to a very fine paste. Nothing is removed from, or added to, the peat: only incorrupt pieces of wood are screened from the mass, ensuring its consistent quality

The therapeutic effect of peat treatment is based on the activating effect of the contained biological components as well as the deep thermal effect. Peat has very good heat resistance. Peat has survived thousands of years in the peatlands in oxygen-free conditions where bacteria cannot thrive.

The main therapeutic agents are humic acids (28.5%) and fulvic acids (10%). In addition, peat contains a number of skin conditioning agents, such as iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, and zinc.

The therapeutic effect

The treatment effect of peat is based on the bioactive ingredients it contains. The main active ingredients are humic and fulvic acids, which have the ability to penetrate through the surface of the skin. They also have the ability to remove toxins from the body. Peat efficiently absorbs heat, which remains unchanged for a long time.

The high temperature of the peat bath stimulates blood circulation and activates metabolism. It binds rheumatoid factors and toxins, improves the endocrine and cell renewal. Treatment Peat is suitable for all ages. It is not known to have an allergenic effect. However, due to overheating of the body, caution is recommended for cardiovascular and hypertensive patients. Pregnant women should also use the product with caution. We do not recommend full-body treatments, but local treatments for cardiovascular, hypertensive, as well as pregnant patients. Peat treatment is a plant based product which contains free estrogens.

Research Results

The Geological Research Centre of Finland has examined the LehtoPeat® thoroughly and has found it to be a first-class treatment peat. In bath and treatment peat, the degree of decomposition is crucial, but it alone is not enough to make a good treatment product. Peat is subjected to laboratory analysis which examines its physical and chemical properties.

The study begins by measuring acidity (pH level) and ash content. The process then proceeds to the primary substances and the chemical structure of the peat. In addition 33 various elements are explored, especially heavy metals and uranium, which great peat treatment does not have.

Good treatment peat is usually found quite deep in a swamp or peatland, so that radioactive fallout has not reached it. Treatment peat should be raised from below the groundwater surface. There are two types of treatment peat – sedge-dominant and curd-dominant. Usually it is a mixture of both.

According to the research done by the geological research centre, the peat of Lehtosuo is:

  • Highly decomposed sedge-curd peat (SC), which contains horsetail, reed, and wood residues.
  • Degree of decomposition is H8 (on a H1-H10 scale), and the pH is 5.7.
  • Ash content of 12% and a sulfur content of 0.34% by weight of dry peat.
  • Water content is 86% of wet weight

Bioactive substances, on average:

Humic acids 28.50%, fulvic acids 10%, 0.34% pectin, 11.70% hemicellulose, and cellulose 8.55%.

The total lipids, humins and mineral materials add up to 40.96% by weight of the dry peat. It contains additional trace elements such as copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, and zinc.

Geologist Riitta Korhonen believes in Peat Care:

Geologist Riitta Korhonen became acquainted with peat treatment for the first time in 1981 while overseas. Peat treatment has been used in spas in Europe for over 200 years, and has been also called the “mud bath”. In fact, it is a very highly decomposed peat that is used in over 60 spas in Germany alone! The use of peat in the sauna is a purely Finnish product development. It has become very popular in Finland, so it could be that other Europeans could potentially be interested in this form of treatment as well.

Treatment peat of Lehtosuo has become familiar to Geologist Riitta Korhonen, both in the laboratory as well as in treatments. She has found that it is a good, sedge-driven peat, which contains humic acids that take up 30% of the dry matter. It has performed very well in experiments and comparisons. Riitta’s personal favourite type of treatment is the bath. “It’s the most powerful and its’ effect is long lasting. But on the other hand, even the footbath and its effect is felt throughout the body. I am always ready for peat treatment when the opportunity arises”, she says. Finland has a good momentum in becoming a mecca of peat treatments in Europe. This is partly due to the rise of professionals in the field: Finland has started to offer training aimed at peat treatment. The goal is to start an education programme for peat producers and distributers. This way we can ensure the quality of the peat and its treatments!

Riitta Korhonen believes in the future of peat treatment. She has been actively involved international symposiums of peatlands, so that funding can be acquired for research of peat treatment, and to get international quality ratings for its products. Things are moving forward in Finland: The Peat industry association has set up a chamber of peat bath and treatment to draw up criteria and to ensure that there is no unexplored peat in the market. The quality label is being developed. Riitta believes that quality standards will open the European market for the domestic product. Peat is a renewable resource!

Treatment peat must be extracted from below the surface of groundwater. As peat is a continuously and naturally deposited biomass, there are more and more opportunities for the use of peat. Sphagnum moss grows new shoots from the top and lower ends at the same time. The growth is about 1 cm per year. In the same time the decomposition layer produces one millimetre of peat. More peat is generated every year in Finland than is able to be used. After the extraction of peat, the peatland can be allowed to develop into a lake, swamp, forest, or for cultivation depending on the opportunities provided by its nature.

Lehtopeat® -treatment peat compares!

So far, the differences between different species of peat have been studied very little. A German researcher has concluded that Carex peat is particularly suitable for treatment of arthritis. Sphagnum peat in turn is said to have more hormonal effects, and on this basis it is more suitable, for example, in the treatment of female diseases.  Riitta Korhonen started peat bath investigation with Turku University’s chemistry professor Kalevi Pihlaja in 1989. There are two types of treatment peat: sedge-intensive and curd-intensive. Usually it is a mixture of both. The treatment peat of Lehtosuo has become familiar with geologist Riitta Korhonen in both the laboratory and in treatments. She has pointed out that it is a good, sedge-dominant peat in which humic acids take up 30% of its dry weight. It has performed well in trials and comparisons.
